- What are kml and kmz files? A kml file is a simple text file that contains data in a structure called xml. You can open these files with any word processor or text reader such as Notepad in Windows. Most browsers will read them, which is not always desirable. A kmz file is just a kml file that has been "encoded" and can't be read. These download easier. Google Earth will open them and then you can save as a kml file to read it if you're curious.
