How to understand the information
This page will be a work-in-progress for a while.
The MODIS satellite heat maps:
- 1) In the main menu click Add / Network Link. Type MODIS Fire Maps in the Name field and copy and paste this link in the Link field:
- 2) Now you have fire information for the whole U.S. Since we used the Network Link feature then this information is updated 2 - 4 times a day. You will get the latest fire info when you boot up Google Earth or right click the layer and click Refresh. Or set the link's Properties to refresh 4 times a day.
- 3) Below are screen shots of the Basin Complex fires near Big Sur in June 2008. The first shot is what the satellite sensor sees. The second shot is zoomed in and shows the red leading edge of the fire approaching Ventana campsite. The dots are like pixels for an image. They are far apart when zoomed in too close for the senor resolution.
- 4) Be sure to save the layer to My Places (right click to save) or you will lose the layer when you shut down Google Earth.
